that next paycheck may be smaller is not going over well among the troops. our pentagon correspondent barbara starr has the details. she's working the story. barbara, what's going on? >> wolf, in this town, there's nothing that causes more anxiety in budget politics than the concept of cutting the pay for the troops. but that is exactly what is on the table if congress and the president cannot reach an agreement on a spending plan. the troops usually are happy to see defense secretary leon panetta, smiles and handshakes all around. but days before he leaves office, panetta has bad news. he's proposing less money in their paycheck next year. panetta, a savvy washington operative in budget politics, is leaving it to congress to figure out how not to cut pay and keep thousands of defense employees on the job. >> we will furlough as many as 800,000 d.o.d. civilians around the country for up to 22 days. they could face a 20% cut in their salary. you don't think that's going to impact on our economy? >> but the recommendation to slow the military pay raise will put troops in the middle of t

with the jewelry inside. fox 5's lauren demarco has the details. >> it happened at fashion center at pentagon city earlier today. the suspects were in and out in under a minute and tonight they're still on the loose. >> we can say it's a smash and grab job. >> within a matter of seconds police say four suspects walk into this zales jewelry store, bust open a case and make off with handfuls of jewelry. police say they took 27 diamond rings. >> and approximate value of $128,000. >> surveillance video shows at least one of the men using a hammer to break through the protective glass. then all four grab what they can. officials say no employees or customers were hurt. >> no threats were made. the employe feared for their safety, so they backed away. >> it happened after 11 a.m. inside the fashion center at pentagon city. >> it's a shock to hear at 11:00 broad daylight, a lot of people. >> mall employee anthony glover says he'll be extra careful in the suspects are caught. >> they do make my a little nervous, you know. have to watch myself. >> after grabbing the rings the suspects ran for the nearest e

at zales in pentagon city yesterday. >> but tonight we have brand- new video of a robbery this afternoon at a jewelry store in frederick. our ken molestina is there and the video is just amazing. you really feel for the woman inside at the time. >> reporter: absolutely, leslie. the images you're about to see tell it all. this was absolutely bold. it was daring. these women who were inside at least some of them, police say were hit with pepper spray. folks, once again it was all caught on the crook cam. let's show you what we're talking about. take a look here. you can see three men enter the colonial jewelry store on south market street after 1:00 today. one of the men appears to have a gun and he orders the women inside on to the floor. a second man then with the pepper spray can is seen firing off some of the chemical. the thieves break the glass cases and make off with handfuls of jewelry. the whole thing was over in minutes. thankfully no one was seriously hurt here. let's go on to yesterday. a similar scene at the zales jewelry store inside pentagon's mall. police say they made off

but we do not know if that is the case with this man. the only thing the pentagon told us about the alleged gunman he was a corporal in the marines and that he was active duty from 2006 to 2010. did tours of duty in iraq and haiti but was most recently listed as reserve. at a weekend news conference authorities here in texas says he was unemployed and navy suffered from a mental illness as a result of his time in the military but no real motive has been given. kyle, his friend, chad littlefield and roth drove to the gun range in kyle's truck on saturday where investigators say ralph shot and killed the two men, stole the truck and drove to his sister's home. told them what he had done and they called police. he is now being held on $3 million bond and there are even reports this morning that the 25-year-old suspected gunman is being unruly in jail. he was tased after attacking some staff there and now reportedly on suicide watch, jon? jon: kyle, a very high-profile former seal. you saw the opinion, apperance there on "the o'reilly factor." i guess reaction is coming in from all

you very much. nice to be here. we're going to start with the entire fleet of the pentagon's f-35 fighter jets which is grounded this morning after a cracked engine blade was discovered on the air force version of the jet during a routine inspection. the pentagon immediately grounded all f-35s even though the navy and marine corps use different versions. the engine is being sent to the manufacturer to figure out how that happened. if you have an f-35, don't fly it today. sort of wait. >>> boeing is hoping to get its 787 dreamliners flying as soon as possible. the company's executives met on friday with the faa to talk about the ongoing battery issues that grounded that 787 dreamliner fleet in the first place. boeing is proposing a fix for the batteries even though they still don't know what caused them to overheat. the faa says it is reviewing the proposal very closely. >>> so you can now add microsoft to the list of companies that says it's been hacked. a small u.n. of computers were infected -- small number of computers were intected with malware. it's similar to the ones that p
